Starting January 1, 2020, Veterans with service-connected disabilities, Medal of Honor recipients and selected caregivers of disabled Vets will be eligible to shop at commissaries and exchanges on military installations including those on Coast Guard facilities. These groups will also be eligible to participate in certain Morale, Welfare and Recreation activities. The expanded customer base was made possible through a provision in the 2019 National Defense Authorization Act.

Veterans will be able to access military posts and stores using their VA health cards. Systems are currently being upgraded to allow current security systems to scan cards to allow entry to those authorized to shop.
